Who Is Sam Friedman?

For those of you who don’t already know me, allow me to introduce myself. I am Editor-In-Chief of National Underwriter, the most outspoken newsmagazine in the property-casualty insurance industry.
I’m in charge of day-to-day editorial operations at our print publication, and oversee NU’s online daily news service at www.propertyandcasualtyinsurancenews.com. I am also a frequent speaker and panel moderator at industry conventions, seminars and conferences.
But it’s my longtime column, “A View From The Press Box,” that has generated the most controversy during my 27-plus years at NU, as I attempt to help shape the industry’s policy and direction by commenting on industry developments and the people behind them. Now I bring my provocative commentary to the Web with this blog.
As for my background, I joined NU in 1981 as a staff writer covering the independent agent beat. I was named Managing Editor in 1986 and Editor-In-Chief in 2001, while also serving as Interim Publisher in 2003.
Before joining NU, I was Associate Editor at “Modern Grocer” for three years. Prior to that, while in college I edited a number of community newspapers and completed an internship at the Associated Press.
I graduated from Brooklyn College in 1979, completed the Professional Publishing Course at Stanford University in 1997, and attended Northwestern University’s Advanced Media Management course in 2003.
I am a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Deadline Club, the New York Financial Writers Association and the American Business Press Association.
I look forward to exchanging views with you via this blog! Thanks for logging on.
